Why Tea Shines

Note To Self -- future research

According to this BBC article, tea was popularized by Portugal's Catherine of Braganza, who married England's king, Charles II, in 1662 (she also popularized marmalade!  And look at the cat snuggling at her feet).

I'm thinking about looking into when coffee became a popular drink, followed by tea, and whether either's effect can be teased out from the historical record.

Also, could there have been a 'secret handshake' of sorts in the ceremonial arrangements surrounding tea drinking.  For example:

"At 3:45 PM we will serve the latest drink from the Far East."

as opposed to:

"Mr. Mugglesby invites you for tea at 4:15 PM."

And could this understanding have organized British society into those who were ignored, and those who were quick to the top?
